Privacy Policy
Last Updated: July 2026
The Myanmar Analysis Journal (MAJ), owned and operated by the Myanmar Research & Analysis Network (MRAN) ("we," "us," or "our"), is committed to protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of our readers, authors, reviewers, and network members.
Because we operate out of Norway, our data processing practices are strictly aligned with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Norwegian Personal Data Act (Personopplysningsloven). Given the sensitive nature of contemporary geopolitical and governance research regarding Myanmar, we enforce rigorous security protocols to protect all personal data from unauthorized access.
1. Data We Collect and How We Use It
We only collect minimal personal data necessary to operate a scholarly journal and manage our research network.
For Website Visitors & Readers: When you browse our website, open-access articles, or download PDFs, standard, anonymized analytical logs (such as IP addresses and browser types) are processed via our host, Squarespace, to maintain site stability and monitor traffic. No personally identifying information is automatically harvested.
For Authors and Contributors: When you submit a manuscript or communicate with our editorial team, we collect your name, email address, institutional affiliation, and professional credentials. This data is used exclusively for peer review, editorial management, and publishing attribution.
For MRAN Membership Applicants: When you apply via our online membership registry, we collect your identification, research profile, and selected membership tier. This information is processed strictly to vet eligibility in accordance with our bylaws.
For Correspondence: If you contact us via email (e.g., reaching out to our administrators or editors), we collect your email address and any text provided to address your inquiry.
2. Strict Confidentiality and Security Foundations
We understand that researching contemporary security, human rights, and regional governance involves substantial privacy and security risks for field analysts and contributors.
Absolute Registry Privacy: Our membership and reviewer databases are strictly confidential. We will never publicly disclose, share, or sell the identities, contact information, or affiliations of our network members or peer reviewers to external entities, third parties, or foreign governments unless required by mandatory Norwegian law.
Secure Infrastructure: All form submissions, member databases, and editorial communications are hosted directly within our encrypted Google Workspace cloud infrastructure, accessible exclusively by authorised board administrators.
3. Third-Party Service Providers
To deliver our services, we utilise trusted third-party platforms that maintain strict data processing agreements under GDPR compliance:
Squarespace: Hosts our website infrastructure and securely pipes form input data.
Google Workspace: Secures our administrative databases, email networks, and application files.
We do not use tracking cookies for targeted behavioural advertising.
4. Legal Basis for Processing
We process personal data based on the following legal frameworks under GDPR Article 6:
Consent: When you voluntarily submit an application form or email inquiry.
Contractual Necessity: When processing an author's manuscript for publication.
Legitimate Interests: To maintain the security, technical stability, and academic integrity of our journal network.
5. Your Data Rights
Under the GDPR, you possess absolute rights regarding your personal information held by us. You may exercise these rights at any time by contacting our data administrator:
Right of Access: You can request a copy of all personal data we hold about you.
Right to Rectification: You can request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"): You can request that we permanently delete your membership records, correspondence, or personal profiles from our internal systems.
Right to Withdraw Consent: You can revoke your consent to data processing at any time.
